The Daemon of Overindulgence (2020)

Hayden Parker May 2, 2025

This entry was first posted on my Patreon on July 30, 2024 and has been reproduced here in its original form.

In Vulturesong, the manifestation of daemons reflects the collective negative karma (via thoughts and actions) of the mortal realm. While traditional “sins” do not exist in this world, the Daemon of Overindulgence is most briefly surmised as a combination of Gluttony, Greed, and Lust. The focus for this design was the idea of being insatiable: in Buddhism, craving, desire, and attachment are together one of the five hindrances to enlightenment.

This artwork I’ve made pulls inspiration from butcherbirds [Wikipedia], ungulates with horn that have overgrown into their skulls, and visuals associated with cancers, sexually-transmitted diseases, and obesity, while still keeping the general daemon form of a bipedal, winged humanoid creature. The main idea was to create something that looks as if it's overloaded to the point of bursting, too heavy to fly with wings that have rotted down to a mess of clogged veins. Overindulgence also has a tail shorter than most daemons, which has thickened and further weighs it down. While this daemon has poor mobility, it is capable of intense bursts of strength, exudes a constant noxious gas from its skin, and venom explodes from its festering sores when attacked.

As related to the Vulturesong plot, this daemon is specifically counter-character to one of Death’s champions, Sorn, a werewolf (wolf god-reborn-as-human) who primarily struggles with drug addiction and the sexual frustration of being separated from his soulmate, another champion and werewolf named Kairav.
